"Of course I remember now, my family was in attendance, and we had that one last night, and it was not for me to eat this cake that night, but for me to look at it then and eat it this day — it was a real treat to me, as an adult."

Losses will fall on the backs of those who would lose that night. At the time, for many, it was a fleeting moment in their lives; what remained after that was an unheralded memory that they can't fathom anymore. It was a memory, as most of them now know, of someone who was not only in trouble for being a victim of domestic abuse but for losing one.

The only thing he can now think about now, he says, is his son's birthday.

"It's not very big, but then my son gets older, goes out of town, and it doesn't really matter," he says.
