Wynne said the ship would go in for repairs on Friday.

"We are committed to continuing to build and refurbish existing vessels of which we have built over the past year of over 90,000 vessel," he said.

"If the boat isn't ready for full operation then we will not start up the refurbishing processes and we will have to deal with the problem of the hull being damaged or broken if it wants to get ready."

Navy officials have already said that the HMS Hunter has a 30,000 tonne capacity of 22,000kg.

'Great idea'

The Royal Australian Navy (RASN) is hoping to add another 16,000-tonne 'hatson' to the ship for the end of 2016 or early 2017, according to a report from industry source, while the RAC was hoping for at least 10,000 tonnes of surplus diesel in 2017.

However, it is not clear if the new 'hip' won't need further modifications, or just a lot less, by the time she arrives back in service.

Australian company CRL was looking at the idea by January of this year, but there was no final timeline provided.
