The company is also working on new propulsion technologies, such as turbo engines, to help push the technology forward, said company spokesman Michael Smerdon.

Smerdon wouldn't say how much the company is investing in these new technologies, but said it has committed to buying 15 more diesel-electric vehicles.

"All that's at stake for us is for the diesel-electric fleet to compete internationally under competitive pricing," Smerdon said. "That's an ongoing process, and we're going forward with this."

Smerdon added that the new diesel-electric fleet will cost $90 million to build.

The firm's electric-power research shows its diesel-electric vehicle research will grow to $180 million by 2022, and plans to have up to 25,000 employees by 2040.

Founded in 1986, Tepco is the world's largest producer of electric propulsion technology and a major power-saving brand.

Anecdotal testimony from U.S. regulators shows that recent testing in the country of Iowa showed that lithium-ion batteries with power output from three electric motors were more reliable than the nonhybrid ones that can get power from two lithium-ion batteries.

Smerdon said it is also testing new ways to enhance battery efficiency by plugging into a car's power unit at an idle. The idea is that the batteries will last longer, and help
